Pay per click banner ads are a mistake
As I continue to learn how to make money blogging , I have come to a few revelations. Here is one: Pay per click banner advertising is a mistake for a small publisher such as my self. Why?
I will give an example here. This is a typical banner ad, hundreds of thousands of which are scattered through the blogosphere. Actually, more like millions and millions.
This particular one is not a pay-per-click one, because I will no longer have any of those on my blogs. This one - if you click, then spend some money with them, I get a cut.
Pay per click ads such as the google adsense display ads - forget about it - they are a complete and utter waste of time and money for the small publisher. So let's pretend the one above is pay-per-click. Here's my reasoning:
- Google gets paid by the advertiser for displaying the ad.
- The advertiser gets exposure for his product/service and achieves his goal - Regardless of whether anyone clicks on the ad.
- I get fuck all - unless you click on the advertisement and most of them are about exposure, exposure, exposure - not about getting people to click on them. The twentieth time you see the ad on a blog, you might click on it just to see what the fuss is about. How many times do you see the same ad on different blogs, over and over again? And what are the chances I am the twentieth blog?
So I, the small publisher has done all the work, used my real estate to display the advertisement, helped google make a few more dollars and given the advertiser what amounts to free advertising. We are all being conned. You will no longer see any pay per click banner advertisements on my sites. I am changing all my Google adsense advertisements to "text only."
At least with those, you get some click throughs because they are more of a tease.
Comments welcome.

I’m not a fan of banner ads of any kind, but PPC banners are certainly a waste of time. I’m not even sure why they would be justfied on a big site.
BTW, I’ve just discovered that you liv ein France, too. Which Region?
The Cote D’Azur. You?
I’m not sure if I agree with this article. Some of the points you make are valid, but isn’t it true that there have to be some form of “advertising” around the internet right now?
Barry – What?
PPC banner ads are a thing of the past. It gives a very poor ROI plus it kinda messes up the look of your page (hurting to the eyes). There are other ways out there…
