Giving up Smoking makes you Fat
Or – at least – it made me fat.
After 10 weeks of no smoking – I finally feel like I have actually quit – I am also a rather shocking 25 pounds heavier. That is 2.5 pounds a week.
Still – I was determined to quit smoking and have done so – and I knew I was going to get a little heavier. But I am now uncomfortably the wrong side of 2xx lbs. Now it is time to deal with that so a mountain bike is the first order of business. Welcome to my new toy and prize for quitting smoking – a Merida TFS XC 700. I am so out of touch with biking nowadays I have no idea if this is a “cool” bike or only fat old men ride them….. Either way – I don’t care – I need the exercise and will be out on my new toy tomorrow.
Here are a couple of photos of the new baby. Past experience tells me it will not be looking this good after my inaugural ride – in fact – it may not survive my current weight, but the little boy in the shop assured me that it is almost indestructible and anyway covered under the warranty. Nonetheless – I figured I would take a picture or two before it gets broke.

Sorry to hear about the pounds. But dont worry in the long run you did the absolute best for your body. Im sure you will also loose the extra weight. Good luck in the future!
As a smoker I am finding that I am addicted to the act of smoking as much as I am the smoke itself. I crave picking something up, putting it in my mouth, stomping it out. I need to have something to do with my hands and I find myself using cigarettes as “thinking” aids.
I am hoping that the newest product out will help me with this. They are called vaporizers, have you heard of them? I am going to try them and even wrote a post about them. if you are as addicted to the act of smoking as I am they my help.
I have also started a simple program to help save other lives by helping buy and distribute vaporizers to other smokers that need or want to quit. People on oxygen that still smoke are d-a-n-g-e-r-o-u-s and vaporizers can stop or at least greatly reduce people blowing themselves up while on oxygen.

No – I haven’t tried them and would not. Having spent 40 years listening to the tobacco companies tell me how safe smoking is – I have no reason to believe the guff I read about these things. I bet in 40 years time we are going to find they are just as bad. Any way – I am 5 months quit cold turkey now so I do not want to start taking nicotine.
I want to actually quit – I don’t want to replace my delivery system.
Mark, good for you!
I have been trying to quit for the past couple of months. The longest I have made it so far is 24 hours. Sounds sad I know. After smoking for almost 50 years I find it really hard. I know I will succeed and reading your post has really helped.
Imagine how much money has gone up in smoke. Unbelievable! I too want to do it cold turkey. But heaven forbid I put on another twenty-five pounds! My stomach already gets in the way of riding my bike.
Guess I’ll have to trade in exercising for smoking.

Thanks – it feels good.
Been out riding today. I am still a good 30 lbs heavier, but I am sure I will lose it once I get over the cravings.
Good luck with your attempt.
